Name: Nick Kirk (Connect with me on LinkedIn)
Title: Director of Solar Operations, Co-Owner
Job(s): Solar Business Development and Management, Oversees Solar Designs and Installations
Bio: After graduating from SUNY IT with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Nick worked briefly in the electronics industry. Realizing that he wanted to connect the hands-on work ethic that his Father helped to cultivate, his newly acquired training in the electronics field, and his passion to preserve the environment; he decided to pursue a career within the Solar PV industry. Through five years of work learning the trade in Ithaca, NY, he developed a thorough knowledge and practical expertise of how solar business works from sales, to design, through installation; from big picture to the minute details. He is nationally certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioner (NABCEP) and in 2016 he was given the NYSERDA award for Outstanding Quality Assurance Scores for 2014-2015. Through his experience, his passion and his dedication, he holds the quality of every Downstream Solar project to the highest level.
- What was the best vacation you’ve gone on and why?
Alpine rock climbing in Patagonia. The cleanest rock, a fearless lead, epic views, and wind that could move a building… As one person once said: “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.”
- What’s something that baffles you and why?
Why we are trying so hard to reinvent nuclear fusion! There happens to be an enormous fusion reactor a safe distance away that delivers more energy to Earth than we need per year in just under 8 minutes. On top of that, it’s wireless! (slight paraphrase from William McDonough)
- What’s your favorite hobby?
It changes every season; in no particular order: skiing, climbing, trail running, and recovery (aka basket weaving)
- If you had to pick one place on Earth as your favorite, what would it be?
My family’s camp on the Tug Hill on a chilly fall day during peak foliage. Any other time, I’d have to say, the mountains.
- What has inspired you to do what you do for work?
My passion for the natural world and preserving what we have left of it.
- Share your favorite quote and what it means to you.
“The simpler you make things the richer the experience becomes.” -Steve House
- What would be one random fact that most people wouldn’t know about you?
I have my private pilot’s license but never fly…
- Share your favorite book and why it inspires you.
Deep Economy by Bill McKibben and The Sacred Balance by David Suzuki. They inspire me on two levels: 1) I’m intrigued by business as unusual and how we can tailor the economy to work cooperatively with the environment while maintaining modern convenience (yes, it is possible), and 2) How interconnected we are from cell to organism to planet.
- Who would you love to meet in person?
Nelson Mandela, RIP.
- What’s a big dream that you think about often?
Being Elon Musk’s private spaceship pilot.
